LATE REVIEWS - Brothers In Arms : Hell's Highway (Video games 2008, Xbox 360)

Staff Sergeant Mat Baker and his fellow soldiers are back in action. After hell they had been through in Road to Hill 30 and Earned in Blood ( You played as Sergeant Joe 'Red' Hartsock ), now they need to go through hell again in Brother in Arms : Hell's Highway. Hell's Highway continues the story from the last two games. If the last two games was set in Normandy, this time they continues their airborne invasion journey in Holland to fight against Nazi German. Way to go...

This game was developed by Gearbox Software and published by Ubisoft for Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows. It using a modified Unreal Engine 3.

The story follows the men of the 101st Airborne Division (502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment). This game will put the players in the role of Staff Sergeant Mat Baker during Operation Market Garden in the later stages of World War II. I really enjoyed the story if you follow the story from the first games, you will understand much. But, if you don't have the chance to play the last two games...it ok. In this game, animation cutscenes will flashback the story from the last two games so you don't need to be so blurry when you play the game and the story. The characters build in a good way, every characters has their own problems especially Mat Baker with his cursed pistol that his father gave to him when he was young (everyone touched it DIED). Also a bad dream between him and his past nightmare dead soldier (friend) Leggett. While Paddock (my favorite character) like always he saying, "Hah, easy as dirt!".

The gameplay are well done. This game has a hybrid between first-person shooter and third-person shooter because this third major installment included a third-person cover system that doesn't included in the last two major games. Well, even I liked this new style, I still liked the old-style fashion way where you don't need to enter third-person to get into cover, just by press a crouching button on behind cover was the way I liked. You can also do this old-style cover in this game, but it will get you in trouble as the bullets still can hurt you even you crouching behind cover. You need to take third-person cover whether you like it or not.

You are given with four types of team, Base of Fire Team, Assault Team, Bazooka Team, Machine Gun Team and also mobile tank. The way of this game does work was by suppressing the enemy's position and then flank the enemy's position. Your work can be done easily if you have a Bazooka Team. They will sent their deathly rocket straight to enemy's position, killing them through covers without order your second team to flank them. On the other hand, Machine Gun Team or Base of Fire Team will easily suppressed enemy's position, you can order Assault Team to flank and neutralize them. You need a strategy to play this game. There's always a short cut ways that you can find in order for your team to flank the enemy.

But eh, I usually attacked them with solo move (depend on the situations) because you got regenerate health system, just like other shooters that follow Call Of Duty ways. Again, they changed the game, I feel more likely to non-regenerate health system because it creates a tension with players, struggle to find cover and protect player's health. Your squad will not died in this game, instead, they will get hurt if they got shot and after that they were off from the battle. In order for your wounded soldier to get back in fight is to get into the next checkpoint. If you were be able to get into the next checkpoint, your wounded soldier will be healed up.

The sound are great in this game, you will feel the emotions of World War II. Voice acting are great. The gun sounds perfect and the music also are outstanding. The scripts are well written...bravo!!! The graphics are nice, just there are some glitches but it's ok. The control are ok to me, you can setting your control ( I prefer default ). You can choose Tactical Six which was funny because that is the default control for Rainbow Six : Vegas 2, you also can choose Tour of Duty setting which is a Call Of Duty default control and there are some control setting other that this two.

In my opinion, I liked the game because of the story. I also liked the gameplay, but I really wished they keep the original gameplay liked the last two games. No regenerate health, no third-person cover (if they want to put first-person cover like Killzone 2 also is good) and no teammates that won't die. It's a tactical shooter, I responsible for my teams, I need a good plan, take a good care of my teams and myself, patiently eliminate my targets and also always be aware of surrounding. If they want to continues with the sequel, please! Do not come out with Brother In Arms Furious Four, I don't like that game even after I only watching a trailer video. What I was really waiting for is Brother In Arms : Battle Of The Bulge.

BROTHER IN ARMS : HELL'S HIGHWAY : 8/10
